Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN) Membership

According to Zumba.com (and as written in their ZIN booklet), ZIN is a “comprehensive system that generates income, and at the same time acts as a springboard for new choreography, job leads, innovative ideas, career tips, and different entrepreneurial opportunities. ZIN provides you with four building blocks to leverage the powerful Zumba brand and achieve success. Those four building blocks are: Community, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Continuing Education”

How to Prepare for My Zumba Instructor Certification Class

Arrival:

First, note the location before your travel day to ensure find it on time and avoid driving around, especially if you are not familiar with the area you are visiting.

It is important to arrive earlier and check in. For example, if your class starts at 8:00, then come at least at 7:30. This will ensure that you receive your welcome package in time, to have a chance to glance through it, sign all required forms, and to get to the classroom (or gym) early enough. Why is that important? It is because you will be able to take the best spot in the floor where you can be close to your instructor. That way you will be able to see, follow and remember the steps much better than if you are standing somewhere in the last row. Instructor classes typically attract anywhere between 80 and 100 participants, therefore it is important not to end up too far from the instructor.

Bring cash:

Many instructors sell Zumba clothes before the class. Even if you have no intention of buying anything, I can assure you that once you see how cute, bright, sparkly, fun, attractive and cool the clothes are, you will feel very compelled to buy at least one or two items. Therefore, bring cash as many instructors are not accepting credit cards and you may not have time to run around looking for bank.

Bring food and drinks:

Next, it is advisable that you bring your snacks, drinks and lunch. The Zumba instructor training day is very intense and packed with activities. Breaks may not be long enough to go out looking to buy something. However, if you have food with you, there will be plenty of opportunities to eat and drink.

What else to bring:

It is also highly advisable to bring a towel, sweatshirt, and perhaps a change of workout clothes for the afternoon session. You can bring a photo camera, but no videotaping is allowed because of privacy matters as well as music copyright regulations.

What to wear?

You should choose clothes that are suitable for workout, which are not too tight or restrictive of movement. As for shoes, it is advisable to wear court shoes or “aerobic” shoes or ones that are suitable for medial, lateral or twisting motions. Jazz sneakers are OK too. Running shoes are not ideal as they are meant to be more for forward motion. However, if you have old and worn-out running shoes, those can be good as well. Avoid buying new shoes just before the workshop as you will spend the whole day in them and therefore have a risk of developing sores or blisters.

How long is the workshop?

The Zumba instructor workshop lasts the whole 8 or 9 hour day (really). On the evening before, there may be a 2 hour Zumba master class organized just to get you familiar with all the moves. You can bring a friend to this class if you want to! You instructor will let you know if this class is available after you sign up for your Zumba instructor class. At any case, make sure you get a good rest before your class!

Should I bring credit card?

Yes, there will be opportunity to join Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN) and get bonus CD/DVD when you do so. Majority of participants choose to join ZIN once they learn about the amazing benefits it offers. It is not mandatory to join ZIN.

What should I expect to learn in the class?

Your instructor will explain/demonstrate the following: Overview of what Zumba is Explain and show different Zumba moves (don’t worry, it will not be too hard to follow) Explain music copyright regulation (this is very important to understand) Explain and demonstrate how to listen to the music, find the rhythm and create a choreography Learning how to identify Latin rhythms (for example, how to recognize a Cumbia, Salsa, or Merengue song) Basic principles of teaching a fitness class and instructor safety tips How to structure your Zumba class Overview of ZIN membership

.....and much more! This is just an example of a class I attended. I am sure every Zumba instructor can teach in different manner, without compromising the quality.

What will I receive in my Zumba instructor welcome package?

You will receive a Zumba manual, ZIN membership booklet, 3 Zumba DVDs to watch at home, and one Zumba CD with music. I can assure you that this material, along with Zumba instructor class, will be more than enough to prepare you to teach Zumba.

Good luck!!!

How Do I Become Zumba Instructor

The first step to becoming a Zumba Instructor is to register for one of Zumba workshops. There are various workshops that you can attend such as Basic Zumba, Gold Zumba, Zumbatomic, Basic 2 Zumba etc. It is recommended that you start with basic Zumba . You can register by going to the site zumba.com and choose instructor training button. Then you can locate the instructor class on your area. Depending where you live, there may not be the chance to attend Zumba certification class right away. Once you find the class closest to you (mind you, it may not be in your neighbourhood at all. Even though I live in a large city, I traveled for my class about 500 km!), register ASAP as those classes fill quickly.
Zumba Fitness LLC does not require you to have any pre-requisites (such as fitness or dance background) to teach Zumba although having previous experience in those two fields will definitely be helpful for you to deliver quality Zumba class to your clients. Participants for Zumba instructor training should be 18 or older. Younger participants shout contact Zumba Fitness LLC. and ask permission for attendance. Sometimes allowances are made for younger participants.
Once you have finished the one-day or two-day Zumba Basic Workshop, you are allowed to teach Zumba, use the "Zumba" name in your class title or promotional materials, and call yourself a Zumba Instructor. Any other use of the Zumba name or logo (such as having a website with word “Zumba” in your URL, or having a logo on your website) must be approved by the Zumba Corporate office. They will ask you to join ZIN (that is, Zumba Instructor Network) and then you will have those privileges as well.
Please know that Zumba Fitness is a registered trademark of Zumba Fitness, LLC, which holds copyright ownership on all Zumba related material and use of name and logo. Anyone who teaches Zumba without having a current Certificate of Completion would be in infringement of trademark and copyright laws.
After the Zumba Workshop, you will be given your Zumba Instructor certificate and you can start teaching whenever you feel ready. Every Zumba Instructor is an independent contractor, so you will be in charge of looking for places to teach, negotiating your contract, set up your own schedule, rates, terms, agreements, etc. with whichever facilities you choose. It is importnat to know that unless you are a ZIN member, your certification will expire in one year and then you will need to finish the instructor class again if you want to continue to teach Zumba.
Some fitness facilities require their instructors to have other fitness certification such as general group exercise certificate as they consider Zumba as a specialty class just like Pilates or Yoga. Most fitness facilities want to ensure that their instructor have related background and experience to safely teach a fitness class regardless of that kind the class is. It is also important form a legal perspective in case that some of the clients sustain an injury during the class.
Therefore it is wise to determine where you would like to teach and what certificates or qualifications you are required to have. You can finish your Zumba certificate first and then work on your general fitness certification.. Some facilities may allow you to teach Zumba while completing your general fitness certification even though you have not finished it yet. For example, two highly recognized certifications are ACE, AFAA, or CanFitPro for Canada.

Zumba in Toronto

What is Zumba and where can I find a class in Toronto?

Zumba is a Latin dance inspired aerobic fitness exercise program first introduced by a choreographer named Beto Perez and his two entrepreneur friends Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion. It was created in the early 1990s and today there are over 20,000 (and increasing every day)Zumba instructors around the world, taking fitness to a whole new level.

Zumba combines high energy Latin music and guides you to dance away your stress and worries in a unique Zumba style moves. Zumba fitness assumes the “easy to do and fun” method that everyone should be able to do. It releases physical and mental stress and burns calories. It combines the moves of several Latin dances: Meringue, Cumbia, Salsa, Reggaeton and other cheerful and up-beat music.

The Zumba choreography combines aerobic exercise moves with a touch of dance that will enable you to sculpt your body in a fun way. That's why it is called "Exercise in Disguise".It includes graceful slow dance moves as well as fast, strong, and active steps to keep you shape and to relax the tensions. The Zumba workout process is designed to burn calories while having fun and without feeling like you are just working out.

One other feature that makes Zumba fitness more desirable is the fact that not only men and women, but also kids can do it. The upbeat and choreography are designed to be easy to follow at your own pace. Even if you are not a very talented dancer. It is also remarkable that doing Zumba is possible even for the handicapped individuals and those in rehabilitation!

Especially, if you are to the larger end it may seem that no matter what you try, it is not bringing you desired results.
